Project Developer – Western US

The Project Developer will be responsible for supporting the development of utility-scale solar, wind and energy storage projects in California and the Western US.  Work will include tracking project progress toward key development milestones, managing schedules and budgets, coordinating a large cross-functional development team, meeting with community stakeholders, prospecting for energy project sites, negotiating land agreements, and managing consultants and vendors. The position requires working with the Director of Development and internal subject matter experts to support origination, legal, interconnection, resource assessment, permitting, construction planning, government affairs, engineering, and finance activities to help build the largest and most important clean energy projects in the US.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Development to understand the energy market in California and the Western US and help to develop a pipeline of projects in the region.
  • Manage all aspects of projects to ensure key development milestones are met.
  • Maintain a robust project schedule, development budget, and risk register.
  • Research and identify potential project sites and assess land ownership, site suitability, proximity to transmission, title issues, and environmental/ permitting feasibility.
  • Negotiate real estate agreements with landowners.
  • Monitor procurements for project revenue opportunities. Manage the preparation and submission of bids in response to Requests for Proposals. Assist in the negotiation of Power Purchase Agreements.
  • Meet with stakeholders to establish a positive, long-term relationships with government officials, utility staff, community leaders and residents.
  • Engage and supervise consultants and vendors that provide services during development.
  • Maintain project management tools and develop status dashboards for internal and external audiences.
  • Coordinate with internal Longroad subject matter experts, including:
    • Environmental & Permitting team – for permitting requirements such as wildlife and impact studies.  Communicate with local and state permitting agencies to ensure compliance with permitting requirements.
    • Interconnection team – to evaluate potential project interconnection locations, and track progress, costs, and risks of interconnection studies.
    • Finance team – to provide inputs and sensitivities for the financial project model. 
    • Engineering and Construction team – to assist in project design, engineering, scoping, drawings, contracting, budgeting, and management.
    • Legal team – to negotiate and execute leases, contracts, and other agreements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years managing development projects in a planning, environmental, legal, financial, engineering, or equivalent capacity.
  • College degree required. 
  • Possess subject matter expertise in on or more business functions related to the development process.  
  • Strong presentation skills and experience public speaking.
  • Ability to read and understand legal documents and contracts.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Experience coordinating with a cross-functional team of experts on complex projects.
  • Must be able to walk over undeveloped land unassisted, travel unassisted and sit at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends to attend meetings and community events.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing solar or wind projects from early stage through financial closing and construction is preferred.
  • Familiarity with California-specific development processes such as the California Independent System Operator cluster and California Environmental Quality Act reviews.
  • Experience leading or managing others.
  • Financial analysis and budgeting skills, formal project management training and skills or policy analysis experience.
  • Comfort developing and maintaining schedules on Microsoft Project.
